What are varicose and spider veins?
Veins that can be seen near the surface of the skin that are generally swollen and bulge, are typically darker in color and may cause heaviness or tiredness of the legs are, varicose veins. Varicose are mostly found on the legs.  Similarly, spider veins are like small varicose veins that appear closer to the skin surface. They tend to range in color from red to a blue, appear 'rope' like and can look tangled. They are also smaller in diameter. Spider veins are found on the face, legs and chest.

Why are varicose and spider veins formed?
Varicose and spider veins usually occur as a result when small valves in veins are incompetent, allowing blood to travel in the wrong direction. This causes the veins to swell and backfill with stagnant blood. They can also appear deep under your skin, where you are not able to see them.

Who is the best candidate for this treatment?
If you have veins that bother you, you may be a candidate. A consult will determine if laser treatment is the best option for you. We are happy to refer you to someone better capable of addressing your specific needs, if laser can not sufficiently resolve your spider veins. Or you need to have treatment for Varicose Veins.

How many treatments will I need?
It’s impossible to determine how many treatments or what kind of treatment will be required without having an evaluation of the problem. Further non-invasive ultrasound testing may be necessary through an appropriate treatment center if we determine your veins are more complex and need an alternate therapy. 

 

What can be expected after treatment?
You will be able to return to your daily activities right away, and can go back to strenuous activity after 2 days. On occasion, patients may experience small raised bumps or hives, and itching or tingling feelings immediately following or during treatment that will resolve in a few hours. Blood vessels gradually lighten and fade away within a few weeks after treatment, with larger veins generally taking longer to disappear.

 

Does vein treatment cause any side effects?
Side effects and complications are not likely. Some patients may experience mild bruising in the area laser is performed. Complications resulting laser treatments are rare. Some discomfort can occur, small blisters can sometimes occur, which in the worst cases is easily managed with a good after laser, skincare-healing salve.
